PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2025: How to Turn Your Home Roof Into a Solar Power Station with Government Subsidy
The Government of India is promoting clean and renewable energy by encouraging citizens to install solar panels on their rooftops. Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana 2025, households can convert their roofs into mini solar power stations and generate their own electricity. This initiative not only reduces dependency on traditional power sources but also significantly cuts down monthly electricity bills. One of the biggest attractions of this scheme is the substantial government subsidy of up to 40% on the installation cost.
Launched on 15 February 2024, the scheme aims to provide solar power access to every home and promote large-scale use of renewable energy across India. For millions of households dealing with rising electricity expenses, this initiative offers financial relief along with long-term savings.
The primary goal of the scheme is to increase the use of solar energy at the domestic level. By providing subsidy support, the government encourages homeowners to install rooftop solar panels that can generate enough electricity to power daily household needs. In many cases, solar power can completely replace regular electricity consumption, leading to zero-bill homes.
The scheme offers several important advantages:
Free or significantly reduced electricity bills
Up to 40% subsidy on approved solar installation capacity
Promotion of renewable and clean energy
Reduction in carbon emissions and environmental pollution
Long-term financial savings for households
Increased national progress toward sustainability goals
By generating electricity at home, users can also contribute extra electricity to the grid through net metering and receive credits that further reduce their bills.
The subsidy depends on the installed system’s capacity and the household’s monthly electricity consumption. Below is the approved slab:
| Monthly Consumption | Solar System Capacity | Subsidy Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 0–150 units | 1–2 kW | ₹30,000 – ₹60,000 |
| 150–300 units | 2–3 kW | ₹60,000 – ₹78,000 |
| 300+ units | Above 3 kW | ₹78,000 max |
For example, a family consuming up to 150 units per month can install a 1–2 kW system, for which they will receive a subsidy of ₹30,000 to ₹60,000.
