Giving location permission to a website or application can be a threat to your privacy, but a new cryptographic technology from Swiss scientists can protect you from it. Be it a website or an application, they often ask you for location permission and since access is necessary, you also give the permission. Most people take it lightly or consider it normal. But after this the location of your device reaches the person of that company and he can trace you as per his convenience.
It is extremely sensitive and if misused, sometimes leads to serious consequences. To avoid these threats, scientists at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in Switzerland have developed a special technology based on cryptographic systems, which allows you to verify your location while hiding your exact location. TUM recently presented it at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) ‘Symposium on Security and Privacy-2025’.
what is technology
It is a cryptographic technique that allows a person to prove that he or she is present in a place (such as a city, region or township) without revealing his or her exact location. It mainly includes two things – Zero Knowledge Proof and Hexagonal Grid System. Zero knowledge proof is a type of mathematical method, which hides the original information and only tells that the information is true. At the same time, the hexagon grid system is a type of map that divides an area into smaller hexagons. This allows locations to be represented with varying levels of accuracy.
how does it work
In this, firstly your space is converted into a grid, that is, your city is divided into various small parts with the help of many hexagon grids. With this, the location of the user’s device is not identified by a location but by a grid system. If you are located in a colony or township within the city, the grid system will not show the exact location of your device to the other person but will show something like grid X-123. Zero Knowledge Proof algorithm hides your exact location, due to which only the general places around you are known to the other person, that is, it will be known which market of the city you are in, but which showroom or restaurant you are in will not be known.
