Shrek 2 is an all time classic animated film, one of those ones that parents can peer over their kids' shoulders and snicker at the inuendos and hidden jokes. Just like ogres, the films are layered it seems as there are all sorts of unknown facts still coming out about them to this day. One of those is the fact that talk show host Johnathan Ross actually had a cameo as the Ugly Stepsister, Doris, in the UK version of the film.
It is not widely shown however, with most showing the US version which is very similar except for the fact the Doris is voiced by American chat show host Larry King instead. Videos of Ross's version have been posted online, but they have not been met with the kindest reviews. One YouTube commenter simply said: "Dreadful."
A lot of other people on TikTok also were confused about never having seen the Ross version. One said: "UK guy, never heard the Ross version!" Another piled in on poor Johnathan, saying: "I'm British and even I think Larry King is better"
But Johnathan Ross was not the only change to the UK dub version either. During the final act, the stars of Far Far Away enter the ball on the red carpet and a TV reporter introduces them to the audience. In the US dub that reporter is voiced by Joan Rivers but in the UK it was dubbed by Kate Thornton.
ScreenRant explained why the changes had been made: "In localising Shrek 2, its producers wanted to maximize the effect of its cameos. Viewers in the UK wouldn't be as familiar with Larry King or Joan Rivers as those in the US, where the pair's popularity was much more certain. Jonathan Ross and Kate Thornton were much more known in the UK, almost serving as the UK equivalents of King and Rivers."
Take a look at Johnathan Ross' Doris and Kate Thornton's TV reporters takes in the UK version of Shrek in this video:
Kate Thornton's contributions were recieved a bit more positively than Johnathan Ross', with on Redditor saying: "I thought the lines were delivered better by Kate Thornton."
