The job market for bachelor's degree holders in the US has become challenging, with one in four graduates unemployed. It's important for Indian students not to limit themselves to just a degree.
It's time for Indian students dreaming of studying in the US to be cautious. Every year, thousands of Indian students go to the US after 12th grade or to pursue undergraduate (UG), and their goal is not only to earn a degree but also to find a job immediately after completing their studies. This investment amounts to lakhs of rupees for students and their families, so they hope to find employment opportunities after completing their studies.
However, recent data shows that the job market for bachelor's degree holders in the US is no longer what it used to be. Due to the lack of a strong job market and the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI), students are facing difficulties finding jobs despite having a degree. Students may have degrees, but the number of companies offering them jobs is dwindling. This is impacting students both financially and emotionally.
According to a Bloomberg report, 25 percent of Americans with four-year college degrees are unemployed. This means one in four people are unemployed despite having a bachelor's degree.
Only approximately 1.9 million Americans aged 25 and older with a bachelor's degree were unemployed in September 2025. This figure has reached the highest level since 1992.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the unemployment rate for bachelor's degree holders increased to 2.8 percent in September 2025, a half-percentage point increase from the previous year. However, unemployment levels are not as high among older workers, meaning that young graduates are primarily affected by this change.
The unemployment rate among Americans aged 20 to 24 was 9.2 percent in September, up 2.2 percentage points from last year. This increase is not only historically large but also sharper than seen since the recession. This directly impacts students who are just graduating from college and looking for jobs.
