The Period Blood Face Mask trend is rapidly gaining attention on social media. Many women are applying their menstrual blood directly to their skin, claiming it gives a natural glow and youthful appearance. While it might sound unusual, this practice, often called “menstrual masking,” is being promoted as a natural facial treatment. But is it really safe and effective for your skin? Fertility expert Dr Mansi Narlikar recently shared a video on Instagram explaining this trend. According to her, the idea is based on the fact that menstrual blood contains stem cells and cytokines, which are believed to help repair skin and enhance its glow. However, this is only a theory, and scientific research on its effects is still ongoing.
Dr Narlikar also points out that menstrual blood is not composed solely of stem cells. It also contains endometrial tissue (the lining of the uterus), vaginal discharge, and other components. Furthermore, because it passes through the vagina, menstrual blood can carry bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. Applying it directly to your face can therefore increase the risk of infection.
Some people compare this practice to PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) facials or “vampire facials,” but there’s a key difference. PRP is sterile and processed explicitly for skin treatment, whereas menstrual blood is not. Currently, there’s no scientific evidence proving that applying menstrual blood to your skin has any real benefit. On the contrary, it could potentially harm your skin.
Applying menstrual blood to your skin can lead to bacterial or fungal infections. It may cause irritation, rashes, or acne. Repeated use over time could increase the risk of long-term skin damage. The skin on your face is extremely sensitive, and introducing unsterile substances can be dangerous.
If you want to achieve healthy, glowing skin naturally, there are safer and scientifically backed methods. Drink plenty of water daily, aim for 8–9 hours of sleep, maintain a balanced diet, and exercise regularly. Additionally, use skincare products suitable for your skin type, such as dermatologist-recommended serums or creams.
Remember, glowing skin is best achieved through consistent self-care, not risky social media trends.
