Cyclone in Sri Lanka : Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ is causing huge devastation in Sri Lanka. The death toll from floods and landslides in Sri Lanka has risen to 56, with 21 people missing. According to reports, the cyclone that originated from the Sri Lankan coast is gradually moving towards India. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. Rescue teams are continuously engaged in relief and rescue operations.
Sri Lanka has declared Friday a public holiday for all except those involved in essential services. The Disaster Management Center (DMC) reported that at least 46 deaths have been recorded in the last 72 hours as adverse weather conditions continue to affect the island. The Meteorological Department said on Friday morning that the cyclonic storm is located near Trincomalee district in eastern Sri Lanka.
Disaster Management Center (DMC) said that 43,991 people have so far been transferred to safer places, schools and public shelters. During this period, schools have been closed, train services have been stopped and the Colombo Stock Exchange halted trading early due to heavy rains.
