Essential Tips for Burping Your Infant

Understanding Baby Burping: Welcoming a new child into your life is both a joyous and educational journey, particularly regarding feeding and burping. Infants often experience discomfort after meals, leading to crying or gas due to trapped air. Therefore, mastering the art of burping is vital. Thankfully, there are straightforward and effective methods that new parents can adopt without stress. Dr. Arpit Gupta recently shared his insights on newborn burping techniques via social media.

Proper Burping Techniques
1. Shoulder Burping Method
This classic technique is widely regarded as the most dependable way to burp your baby.

• Position your baby against your shoulder, ensuring their chin rests comfortably there.

• Use one hand to support their hips for stability.

• With your other hand, gently pat or rub their back from top to bottom.

• Remember to be gentle, as newborns have delicate bones.

This posture applies gentle pressure on the baby's stomach, facilitating the release of trapped air, which can provide immediate relief. Many specialists believe this method is particularly effective after nighttime feedings.

2. Alternative Burping Technique
This method is beneficial if your baby is less active or waking up after a daytime meal.

• Sit your baby on your thigh with a slight forward lean.

• Form a 'C' shape with your hands to support their chin and neck, preventing their head from drooping.

• Gently tap or rub their back.

When and How Often to Burp:

• Right after each feeding

• Once during feeds if bottle-feeding

• If your baby shows signs of discomfort, such as crying or tummy rumbling, pause and burp them.
