John Felix Anthony Cena is an American actor and is also a part-time professional wrestler. He made his wrestling debut on June 27, 2002, on an episode of SmackDown, where he interrupted Kurt Angle, delivering the famous “ruthless aggression” promo.
During the early phase of his career, Cena was a babyface, portraying a generic character that failed to connect with the WWE Universe. However, in late 2002, WWE management decided to change his character and give him a new persona, known as the “Dr. of Thuganomics.”
During the 2005–2015 era, Cena became the biggest star in the world of professional wrestling, with the highest merch sales, and having a connection with the WWE Universe that many other wrestlers couldn’t. After being in the WWE for more than a decade, Cena shifted his focus towards Hollywood and became a part-time wrestler post-2016.
As of 2025, Cena currently holds the Intercontinental Championship, which he won after defeating Dominik Mysterio. He will officially retire from professional wrestling on December 14, 2025, at WWE’s TV special, Saturday Night’s Main Event. His final opponent will be the winner of the “Last Time is Now Tournament”.
