World AIDS Day: World AIDS Day is celebrated every year on December 1, which is an important day dedicated to creating awareness about HIV/AIDS around the world. The day is not only an encouragement to those fighting the disease, but also an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives to the disease.

Why is AIDS Day celebrated??

1. To create awareness about HIV/AIDS

On this day, people are told how HIV is spread, how it can be prevented, the importance of testing and how timely treatment can save lives.

2. To reduce social discrimination

People living with HIV still face discrimination, prejudice and misunderstanding in many places. World AIDS Day is a voice of equality and dignity for them.

3. To support the people who are suffering from the disease

This day conveys the message that people living with HIV are not alone. Society is encouraged to accept and support them.

4. To promote treatment and study

Scientists around the world are working on new drugs, vaccines and better therapies. This day highlights the importance of those efforts.

5. To remember the dead

This day is also celebrated in memory of crores of people who died due to HIV/AIDS.

History of World AIDS Day

When did it start?

World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. The concept was launched with the joint efforts of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS.

Red ribbon campaign, blood test camps and awareness rallies are also organized in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and other states.
