Veteran actor and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan has revisited one of the most delicate phases of her personal life the time when her daughter Shweta Bachchan got married and moved out. What looked like a normal family milestone from the outside she says turned into a deeply emotional shift within her home.
Speaking at the We The Women Asia session in Mumbai Bachchan recalled how the transition caught her completely off-guard. The change she admitted stirred emotions she had never experienced before even though she always considered herself a firm practical parent.
What triggered this sudden emotional shift?
Sharing her experience with the audience she said After Shweta got married I felt loneliness. I felt very very I mean Ive never been so disturbed in my life like I did when she got married. I dont know what happened. I just could not stop crying. And I was the hardest mother to this child. But you know there was something that just left me and I said Look I cant do this.
Her candour offered a rare glimpse into the private side of someone often viewed as calm composed and unshakeably strong.
When asked if her reaction could be linked to empty nest syndrome Bachchan didn’t give a definite yes. Instead she reflected on the dynamics of her own upbringing.
She responded I dont know. But I think maybe because I come from a family of girls. When Shweta was born my father was celebrating and he was so happy. When Abhishek was born he said Haan theek hai.
Her remark not only revealed how daughters held a special place in her childhood home but also how that emotional pattern shaped her own parenting.
How did Abhishek Bachchan react to the contrast?
The conversation briefly shifted to her son Abhishek Bachchan with the journalist joking Poor Abhishek poor boy referring to his grandfather’s reaction. Jaya nodded in agreement adding with a smile Poor boy. Well hes making up for it now getting all the love.
Shweta married Nikhil Nanda on February 16 1997 and the couple is today parents to Navya Naveli and Agastya.
