Another Indian state has taken a significant decision in favour of women. Now, millions of female employees in Karnataka will receive one day of paid period leave each month, which they can avail without a medical certificate.

Menstrual days are very difficult for women. Pain, weakness, and fatigue can sometimes make working in the office challenging. Therefore, if women are given the opportunity to rest during these special days, both their health and work can be improved. With this thought in mind, another Indian state has taken a significant decision in favour of women. Now, millions of female employees in Karnataka will receive one day of paid period leave each month, which they can avail without a medical certificate.

This decision is also significant because previously, period leave was mostly limited to private institutions or select states. However, by implementing it at the government level, the Karnataka government has sent a strong message regarding women's health. So, let's find out until what age women can avail of this period leave.

Up to what age can women avail themselves of period leave?

The Karnataka government has officially announced that all female government employees between the ages of 18 and 52 will receive one day of paid menstrual leave every month. This means a female employee will receive a total of 12 days of leave per year, fully paid. This benefit will apply to all three categories of female employees in the state: permanent, contractual, and outsourced.

No medical certificate required to avail leave

The government has also emphasized that female employees will not need to provide any medical proof to avail leave. Period leave cannot be combined with any other leave, such as casual leave, medical leave, etc. This leave will be recorded separately in the office.

How many women will benefit?

According to government data, over 1.5 lakh female government employees work in Karnataka. Now everyone will benefit from this special menstrual leave. Labor Minister Santosh Lad said that this will improve women's health, reduce mental stress, and increase women's comfort in the workplace.

In 2024, the Karnataka government proposed providing women with only six days of period leave per year. However, in October 2025, this was increased to 12 days, taking into account women's needs.
