Xavi Simons makes statement as Tottenham avoid breaking unwanted Premier League record

Xavi Simons' sublime solo goal eased the pressure on Thomas Frank - whilst also ensuring Spurs avoided an unwanted piece of Premier League history.

Defeat against Frank's former employers would have marked an 11th top-flight home loss in 2025. That has never happened before in N17 and while it could yet still materialise against Liverpool on December 20, this Tottenham victory offered hope they are finally ready to turn the corner.

Not only did Simons, starting his first match in a month, open his account for the club but he also created Richarlison's opener to help fire Spurs to their first home league win since the opening day of the season against Burnley in August.

It was also the first time Frank's leaky backline has recorded a domestic clean sheet since the 3-0 trouncing of Everton in late October.

This front-foot display was a far-cry from last weekend's Fulham shambles and had Spurs been more clinical in the second half, they would have run riot.

Guglielmo Vicario was booed by clusters of the disgruntled Tottenham faithful last Saturday following his costly error against the Cottagers.

He received a rapturous reception as his name was read out over prior to kick-off and he soon earned further cheers when he kept out a low strike from Brentford talisman Igor Thiago.

There was a refreshing fluidity about Spurs, who made five changes from the midweek draw at Newcastle, as Simons and Archie Gray both sparkled in midfield.

Big-money recruit Simons undoubtedly grabbed his opportunity with both hands and he got the ball rolling as the hosts broke the deadlock.

Bursting down the right to collect Pedro Porro's pass, the Dutchman squared accurately across goal for the Brazilian to fire home his seventh goal in all competitions.

Then came a major flashpoint, Cristian Romero flew in on Thiago with a lunging scissor tackle from behind and furious Brentford were adamant the Argentine should have seen red.

Instead, referee Robert Jones awarded Romero his seventh yellow card in 12 top-flight appearances, equalling his highest total of Premier League cautions in a season since joining Spurs in 2021.

Spurs were fired up and their hunger was rewarded just two minutes before the break when Simons grabbed his first goal in Tottenham colours.

The nimble 22-year-old snapped into two tackles before winning the ball and charging from inside his own half towards Brentford's box.

It was not quite Micky van den Ven against Copenhagen but Simons still left the Bees' midfield for dust before applying a confident finish past Caoimhin Kelleher.

He could have had a second just after the hour mark when Kelleher miscued his clearance, Richarlison set the £51.8million signing but his effort failed to trouble the recovering Republic of Ireland goalkeeper.

Romero showcased his class with an excellent last-ditch tackle to deny Thiago before subs Wilson Odobert and Pape Matar Sarr squandered late opportunities to add gloss to the scoreline.
