The Abandons has recently launched on Netflix, featuring a stellar Western drama cast including Game of Thrones sensation Lena Headey and The Fall favourite Gillian Anderson.

Critics and audiences have delivered divided verdicts on the series, with some proclaiming it "better than Yellowstone" whilst others have dismissed it as a "waste of time".

Boasting an impressive ensemble cast, the series culminates in a gripping finale that delivers an epic showdown.

A significant cliffhanger concludes the final episode, leaving audiences questioning whether a potential second series will provide the answers they crave.

Here's everything you need to know regarding the show's renewal prospects for a second series.

Initial uncertainty surrounded the episode count for the debut series, as Netflix had originally commissioned a 10-episode run.

In October 2022, the streaming giant enlisted screenwriter and director Kurt Sutter for this period action drama.

Nevertheless, reports emerged years later that Sutter had departed the production with just weeks of filming left to complete.

At this point, widespread budget reductions had already trimmed the series from 10 episodes down to seven.

Currently, Netflix has not confirmed renewal for a second series, leaving the show's future hanging in the balance.

Given the dramatic cliffhanger concluding the inaugural series, it's evident the programme is positioned for a return to deliver those essential revelations. Anderson and Headey have expressed to TV Insider their keenness to carry on the narrative, with Headey affirmatively stating "yes".

However, Anderson, known for her role in The X-Files, revealed that there haven't been any conversations about potential plot developments among the creative team yet.

"I don't think there will be until we know what the response is," she clarified.

The duo did share that they had a "really great fun" shooting their concluding fight scene, which required a full day of filming.
