Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan is yet to officially announce his retirement from international cricket. Although he has already retired from Test and T20 international cricket, he now wants to play at least one series in all the three formats at home. After that, he will retire from international cricket. He is still active in professional cricket, as he hopes to return to international cricket for at least one final series.
Last year, during the India vs Bangladesh Test match at Kanpur in September 2024, Shakib Al Hasan announced his immediate retirement from T20 international cricket. He also requested the board to retire from Test cricket after the Mirpur Test next month. However, he did not get government approval for this. Shakib Al Hasan is a Bangladeshi MP and is facing several cases. He may be arrested after entering Bangladesh.
Shakib Al Hasan is currently playing in various franchise-based leagues, but hopes to return home soon. That is why he is continuing his journey in professional cricket. “I hope (to return to Bangladesh) and that’s why I’m playing (to retire in front of the home crowd) and I think it will happen and that’s the reason and I’m playing professional cricket (to stay fit and in good shape so that I can be available for international cricket),” Shakib said on the ‘Beard Before Wicket’ podcast with Moeen Ali on Sunday.

Shakib added, “I have not officially retired from all formats. This is the first time I am revealing this. My plan is to go back to Bangladesh and play ODIs, Tests and T20I series and then retire. I mean, I can retire from all formats in one series. So it can start with T20I, ODI and Test or Test, ODI and T20I matches. Whatever, I don’t mind, but I want to play a full series and then retire. That’s what I want.” He added that he would not play after this.
The former captain added, “I think when a player says something, he tries to stick to his word. They usually don’t suddenly change their mind. It doesn’t matter if I play well or not. If I want to play, I can have a bad series after that, but I don’t have to. I think that’s enough. It’s a good way to say goodbye to the fans who have always supported me and it will be a great opportunity and feeling to give something back to them by playing a series at home.”
