Prime Minister Modi is co-chairing the AI Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron. In an interview given to a website before PM Modi’s arrival in Paris, President Macron said that he and Prime Minister Modi will strive for ‘technological sovereignty’. The French President said, “Like Prime Minister Modi, we also strongly believe that India and France are two great powers and we have a special relationship. We respect America and want to work with it, we also want to work with China, but do not want to be dependent on anyone.”

AI can help transform the lives of millions of people by improving health, education, agriculture and much more. It can help create a world in which the journey towards the Sustainable Development Goals becomes easier and faster. To do this, we must pool together resources and talent. We should develop open-source systems. Which increases trust and transparency. We must create quality data sets free from bias. We must democratize technology and create people-centric applications. We must address concerns to cyber security, misinformation and deep fakes. And we must also ensure that the technology is rooted in the local ecosystem so that it becomes effective and useful.

Losing jobs is the worst disruption of AI. But history has shown that work does not end because of technology. Its form changes and new types of jobs are created. We need to invest in skilling and reskilling our people for an AI-driven future. There is no doubt that the high energy intensity of AI needs attention. Green power will be needed to fuel this future. India and France have worked together for years to harness the power of the sun through initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance. As we move our partnership toward AI, there is a natural progression from sustainability to innovation to shape a smart and responsible future.

At the same time, sustainable AI is not just about using clean energy. AI models must also be efficient and sustainable in size, data requirements, and resource requirements. After all, the human brain manages to write poetry and design space ships using less power than most lightbulbs. India has successfully built digital public infrastructure for more than 1.4 billion people at very low cost. It is built around an open and accessible network. It has a wide range of applications to modernize the rules and our economy, improve governance and transform the lives of our people.
