Weight Loss Medicine Ozempic : Danish pharmaceutical manufacturer Novo Nordisk has launched its much-awaited diabetes drug Ozempic in India. The company has fixed the price of its initial weekly dose of 0.25 mg at Rs 2,200. According to a report, this medicine will be available in the dosage of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg and 1 mg in the Indian market. Ozempic is a weekly injection for type 2 diabetes patients, which has been available in many countries of the world including the US since 2017.
According to the rates announced by the company, the price of 1 mg dose is Rs 11,175 per month. Whereas, the price of 0.5 mg dose has been kept at Rs 10,170 per month. For 0.25 mg dose, Rs 8,800 will have to be spent every month. The starting price of 0.25 mg on a weekly basis will be Rs 2,200 per week. India’s drug regulatory body CDSCO approved Ozempic (samaglutide) for use in adults with type-2 diabetes in October 2024. According to the US FDA, this medicine along with diet and exercise helps in blood sugar control. It is helpful in reducing the risk of major cardiovascular complications in type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease.

Ozempic works like the natural hormone GLP-1 present in the body. It stimulates insulin production when blood sugar rises. Slows down the process of stomach emptying, which prevents hunger for a long time. In high doses it reduces appetite, so in many countries it is also used for off-label weight loss.
Some of its common side effects have also been mentioned. This causes the risk of inflammation in the pancreas. There may be problems to gall bladder. Problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache and constipation may occur during its use.
