New Delhi: The global race for Artificial Intelligence has once again intensified. OpenAI has launched GPT-5.2 for ChatGPT, its biggest update in recent months. This move comes at a time when Google’s Gemini 3 has received strong reviews and competition has reached a new level.
The purpose of GPT-5.2 is not only to make ChatGPT more accurate, but also to make it more useful in everyday tasks. Be it creating spreadsheets or writing complex code. At the same time, OpenAI has signaled another big change, which has attracted equal attention. A special adult mode for the right videos, which is set to be introduced early next year.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.2 is faster than before, more capable of finding information and performs better on deep reasoning tasks. This model has been specially designed to handle long and complex workloads in subjects like Math, Science and Programming.
The company aims to expand ChatGPT from a simple chatbot to a trusted work partner. This update is being released in three different tiers, so that users can choose it as per their needs according to computing power and cost.
The launch of GPT-5.2 also reflects the high-pressure environment within OpenAI. According to reports, a few weeks ago CEO Sam Altman told employees that the company was in a Code Red situation and needed an internal reset to counter Google’s growth.
This situation is reminiscent of the era of Google in 2022, when Code Red was declared there too after the sudden popularity of ChatGPT. Now with the rollout of GPT-5.2, Altman says that by January the company will stabilize itself and return to a much stronger position. In an interview, he also said that Gemini 3 has had less impact on our metrics than we feared, which shows the company’s confidence in the new model.
OpenAI is going to expand its infrastructure on a large scale in the coming time, the estimated cost of which is said to be more than 1 trillion dollars. To support this expansion, the company is becoming more dependent on business customers. GPT-5.2 has been introduced specifically keeping this need in mind. OpenAI says this model can unlock even greater economic value for people in automation, data analysis and repetitive tasks. Paid users will start getting this update from today.
GPT-5 was launched in August, but users had mixed opinions about it. Many people felt that this jump was not as big as expected. GPT-5.1, which came in November, also could not remain in the news for long, because then Google’s Gemini 3 came into the limelight. In such a situation, GPT-5.2 is being seen as a strong comeback of OpenAI.
Along with the model upgrade, OpenAI is also going to bring a big change in the way ChatGPT is used. The company has already deployed age prediction tools to determine whether a user is a minor or not. According to Fiji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, the company plans to launch “adult mode” in the first quarter of 2026. In his words, this would be in line with OpenAI’s philosophy that the company wants to treat adult users like adults.
Sam Altman explained the reason for this change in a post dated October 2025. He wrote that we had made ChatGPT very restrictive to be careful about mental health problems. Now that we have been able to reduce serious mental health problems and have new tools, we will be able to safely relax restrictions in most cases. In December, as we fully implement age-restrictions and as part of our philosophy to treat adult users as adults, we will allow even more content, such as erotic content, for verified adults. It is clear from this statement that after the implementation of age-based gating, the experience of ChatGPT for adult users may change to a great extent.
