Google Launches Disco: Platform To Build Web Apps From Browser Tabs

Google has launched a new Gemini-powered AI experiment for web browsing called Discoaimed at turning open browser tabs into customized applications. Its key feature, GenTabsanalyzes what users are viewing and automatically suggests interactive web apps that can help them complete tasks. Users can also build their own apps simply by typing prompts. For example, students researching a topic might be prompted to generate a visualization tool to better understand complex concepts, while casual users could create a meal planner from recipe tabs or a travel organizer from trip- searches.

Google’s Gemini 3 Powers Smarter, Multi-Tab Web Experiences

What makes GenTabs distinct from existing AI chatbots is its ability to generate personalized applications directly from browser content using Gemini 3. It draws from both active web pages and the user’s Gemini chat history to build context-aware tools on the fly. After creating an app, users can continue customizing it through natural language commands. Importantly, Google notes that all generative elements within GenTabs link back to their original online sources, maintaining transparency in how information is used and presented.

This experiment reflects Google’s broader strategy to bring AI deeper into the web-browsing experience. Instead of launching a standalone AI browser like Perplexity’s Comet or ChatGPT Atlas, Google has integrated Gemini directly into Chrome, enabling users to ask questions about the page they are viewing. GenTabs extends this functionality by considering not only the current tab but the user’s entire browsing session across multiple tabs, supporting research, learning, planning, and productivity.

Google Tests GenTabs Feature with Select macOS Users

At present, Disco is being offered only to a limited group of testers through Google Labs, where feedback will help shape future development. Google suggests that promising ideas from Disco could eventually be incorporated into larger Google products, and GenTabs is just the first of several planned features. Users wishing to try the experiment must join a waitlist, with the initial version available exclusively on macOS.

Summary:

Google has launched Disco, a Gemini-powered AI experiment that turns browser tabs into custom apps through its GenTabs feature. GenTabs creates context-aware tools using browsing activity and chat history. Currently in limited testing via Google Labs on macOS, Disco may influence future Google products as development progresses.
