In the winter season, the use of refrigerator reduces comparatively in most of the houses. This is the reason why many people switch off the refrigerator for a long time to save electricity. However, experts warn that this habit can not only damage the fridge, but can also seriously affect its functionality in the future. Modern refrigerators available in the market are made in such a way that they maintain a balanced temperature throughout the year. In such a situation, closing them again and again can prove to be harmful for their technical structure.

Why does closing the refrigerator increase the risk of spoilage?

The biggest risk of switching off the refrigerator in cold weather is on its cooling system. According to experts, when the fridge remains closed for a long time, moisture starts accumulating inside it. This moisture gradually affects the condenser coil, gasket and cooling pipes. Sometimes this problem increases so much that the refrigerator is not able to provide the required cooling after restarting the machine.

Moreover, switching the refrigerator on and off every time puts additional pressure on the compressor. The compressor is the most expensive and critical part of the refrigerator, and damage to it can significantly increase repair costs.

Danger of mold and odor in a closed refrigerator

During cold days, a moist environment is created inside a closed refrigerator, which increases the chances of mold, bacteria and odor. This is not only harmful for health but also damages the internal structure, rubber seals and trays of the fridge. If the refrigerator is kept closed for several days, it may take a lot of time and effort to clean it.

What is the right way to save electricity?

Experts believe that instead of switching off the refrigerator, saving electricity by adopting some simple measures is a better option.
1. Keep the temperature setting correct – There is no need to set the refrigerator at a very low temperature in winter. Generally it is sufficient to keep the freezer at 5°C–7°C and -15°C to -18°C.
2. Do not overload the fridge – Keeping more items increases the pressure on the cooling system, which also increases electricity consumption.
3. Do not open the door frequently – Opening the door frequently takes more energy to cool the refrigerator.
4. Check the gasket – If the door rubber seal is loose then cold air leaks out, which increases power consumption.
5. Defrost from time to time – When ice accumulates in an old model refrigerator, both cooling and power consumption are affected.

When is it okay to turn off the refrigerator for a long period of time?

Only if you are going out of the house for several days or weeks can you consider turning off the refrigerator. But before closing it is mandatory to keep it completely empty, clean and dry. Also, the door should be left slightly open so that moisture and odor do not accumulate.
