Cumin, an important spice of Indian kitchen, is not only a taste enhancer but also a real treasure of health. Ayurvedacharya explains that roasted cumin is twice as beneficial as raw cumin. Ayurvedic protector of digestion, blood, weight and hormone balance, if consumed properly.

In Ayurveda, cumin has been described as ‘Deepaniya’ i.e. it increases digestive fire and removes vata-phlegm. Charak Samhita says – “Jeerakam Deepnam Shrestham” i.e. it is the best digester. If taken properly, it proves beneficial in everything from stomach problems to weight control and blood sugar.

Cumin contains elements like cuminaldehyde, thymol, terpene along with iron, magnesium and rich antioxidants. These improve digestion, reduce gas and bloating, as well as keep the metabolism balanced. Modern research also considers cumin useful in controlling blood sugar and cholesterol.

For women, it is a good source of iron, which increases hemoglobin and improves the quality of milk during breastfeeding.

Cumin water is a panacea for weight loss and detox. Soak one spoon cumin seeds overnight, boil it in the morning and drink it lukewarm. This strengthens digestion, keeps the stomach clean, reduces obesity and swelling.

Roasted cumin powder is excellent for digestion. Make roasted cumin powder and take a pinch after meals. It provides instant relief from gas, sour belching and stomach ache. Roasting further increases its antioxidant properties. Boil equal amounts of cumin, fennel and coriander and drink water. It balances hormones, is beneficial in period problems and burning sensation during urination.

According to Ayurveda, weak digestion is the root of most diseases. Roasted cumin activates the digestive fire, without increasing acidity. It expels gas, stops diarrhea and relieves constipation. It also reduces stress and reduces abdominal swelling.

Cumin is not just a spice, but a natural protector of digestion, blood, weight and hormones. Roasted cumin is beneficial, which can be included in daily routine to stay healthy. However, some caution is also necessary. Do not take more than one or two teaspoons a day, otherwise it may cause stomach irritation. Pregnant women should use it in limited quantity only.
