New Delhi: Everyone wants thick, strong and shiny hair in the winter season, but the reality is often the opposite. Cold winds and low humidity make the scalp dry, due to which hair problems start increasing. Especially dandruff and itching become the most common problems of this season.
Most people cover their body with warm clothes in winter, but ignore the care of the scalp. The result is that the scalp becomes dry, the white layers start falling off and the health of the hair is adversely affected.
The biggest reason for increase in dandruff in winter is not cleaning the hair adequately. Due to cold, people reduce hair wash, due to which oil and dirt start accumulating in the scalp. This situation gives opportunity to the fungus causing dandruff to grow.
The fungus called Malassezia grows rapidly on dead skin and accumulated oil. According to experts, a gap of one or two days is fine, but not washing hair for a week can make the problem serious. Doctors recommend using mild or anti-dandruff shampoo every other day.
Using too strong or alcohol-based hair products also promotes dandruff. Such products take away the natural moisture of the scalp, which increases irritation, swelling and itching.
Stress has a direct impact on the health of the scalp. Due to increase in stress, cortisol level in the body increases, which causes inflammation in the scalp. This is why the problem seems to subside during holidays, but dandruff returns as soon as the daily hustle and bustle begins.
If there is itching in the scalp, scratching again and again can make the condition worse. Due to this the skin becomes more sensitive and dandruff starts increasing. Scalp care should be done as gently and delicately as facial skin.
Dandruff is not just a hair problem but a skin condition, which is often associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Wrong hair care, bad eating habits and unbalanced lifestyle can increase it. If the problem persists for a long time, it is important to consult a dermatologist.
