Sri Lankas former Test cricketer and World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatungas elder brother Dammika was arrested by the countrys anti-corruption commission but was released on bail on Monday. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) stated that 63-year-old Dammika was arrested for irregularities in the tender process for crude oil purchases by the state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) in 2017. He was the chairman of the corporation at that time. CIABOC stated that due to Dammika’s improper influence CPC suffered a loss of 800 million Sri Lankan rupees. The commission informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that Dammika’s younger brother Arjuna has also been named as a co-accused in the case. Arjuna has not been arrested because he is currently abroad. Arjuna was the Petroleum Minister when Dammika was the head of CPC. Dammika played two Test matches as an opening batter against Australia in 1989-90. Later he became the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sri Lanka Cricket the country’s governing body for the sport. Under his brother Arjuna’s captaincy Sri Lanka won the 1996 ODI World Cup which remains the teams first and only ODI World Cup title. Dammikas arrest has drawn attention because of his familys strong connection to Sri Lankan cricket. Both he and his brother Arjuna are well-known figures in the country not just for their cricket achievements but also for their involvement in public service and administration. Many cricket fans have expressed surprise at the case given their prominence in the sport. The case is still under investigation and authorities are looking into how the tender process was handled at CPC. Legal proceedings will continue in Colombo and more details are expected as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile Dammika remains out on bail while the court examines the evidence.
