People of river communities turn to different livelihoods when the flood season arrives, one of which is fish scooping.

The flood season often brings unexpected rewards for river communities and this video offers a vivid example. While scooping fish as part of his daily routine, the fisherman did not anticipate anything out of the ordinary. But as he lifted his scoop, a massive clown featherback thrashed violently inside. He cheered in excitement as he struck gold in the middle of the river.

The racket caught a huge squinty fish during the high water season

Fish scooping requires only basic equipment and no bait, using lengths of net attached to bamboo poles to create a scoop. It is usually done near floating fish cages on rivers. When the caged fish are fed, the feed attracts wild fish, and locals paddle out in small boats to scoop them up. Their catch typically includes a variety of carp species.
