New Delhi: In today’s fast and technological lifestyle, many people work sitting on a chair for long hours. Be it an office desk, work from home situation or sitting in front of the TV for long hours, this sedentary lifestyle is having a serious impact on our health. According to cardiologists, it is not just back or neck pain, but it also increases the risk of serious diseases like heart and cancer.

Experts believe that sitting at one place for hours affects the normal activities of the body like smooth flow of blood, metabolism and health of cells. This can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and even cancer. Research has found that people who spend six to eight hours or more sitting every day have a higher risk of total mortality and serious health problems.

Causes and risks

Sitting for long periods of time has become a sedentary risk to the body because:

1. Blood circulation slows down, due to which the energy flow in the body reduces.

2. Cholesterol and blood sugar levels may increase abnormally, leading to conditions like metabolic syndrome.

3. The heart has difficulty in pumping blood properly, due to which the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular diseases increases.

4. According to research, sitting for a long time also increases the risk of death from other serious diseases including cancer.

It is especially worth noting that even by doing some exercise daily, the risks cannot be completely eliminated. Studies show that if the entire day is spent sitting for 8–10 hours, it has adverse effects on the heart and other organs even if the person exercises by going to the gym or walking in the evening.

How to avoid inactivity

Every 45–60 minutes one should get up and walk or stand for a while.

Standing for some time improves blood circulation.

While working at a desk, light stretching exercises or simple physical activities should be adopted.

If possible, a standing desk can also be used.

Health experts warn that sitting for too long is not just an inconvenience, but a serious health risk. Therefore, it is very important to include a little movement in your daily routine, whether it is a short walk, working while standing or taking regular breaks so that you can avoid heart attack, cancer and other serious health problems.
