As soon as this news broke, many people became worried about how they would now be able to vote. But let us assure you that even if your name has been removed, there is no need to panic.
Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in West Bengal next year, and before that, there is a lot of activity surrounding the voter list. The Election Commission has released the draft voter list for the state under SIR 2026 (Special Intensive Revision). Approximately 58 lakh voters' names have been removed from this list.
As soon as this news came out, many people became worried about how they would now be able to vote. Let us assure you that even if your name has been removed, there is no need to panic. The Election Commission has clearly given all such people a full opportunity to file claims and objections. So, let's find out what those whose names have been removed can do and until when they can file a claim?
Why were names removed from the list?
According to the Election Commission, there are several reasons why voters' names were removed from the draft list. Some voters were found to be deceased, some had permanently shifted elsewhere, some were missing or had not been at their address for a long time, and some had their names registered in more than one place (duplicates). Approximately 58 lakh names were removed for these reasons. But this does not mean that all the names were removed incorrectly. If your name has been removed by mistake, you can get it added again.
What can those whose names have been removed do?
If your name has been removed from the voter list, you will have to file a claim. The Election Commission has created a simple process for this. You can file your claim or objection from December 16, 2025, to January 15, 2026, which means you have approximately one month.
