Kolkata Knight Riders spent a record Rs 25.20 crore to sign Australian all-rounder Cameron Green and Rs 18 crore to secure Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana in the IPL mini-auction held on Tuesday.
Uncapped Indian players were also in high demand. Uttar Pradesh’s 20-year-old left-arm spinner Prashant Veer and Rajasthan’s 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Kartik Sharma were both bought by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 14.20 crore each becoming the highest-paid uncapped players in IPL history. Their base price had been just Rs 30 lakh.
Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi Dar also earned a big Rs 8.40 crore from Delhi Capitals starting from a base price of Rs 30 lakh making him one of the top earners in the mini-auction.
India internationals Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan went unsold initially despite good recent performances. However Sarfaraz was later picked by Chennai Super Kings for Rs 75 lakh in the accelerated auction. Before the auction Sarfaraz had scored a rapid 73 off 22 balls for Mumbai against Rajasthan in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Green overtook fellow Australian Mitchell Starc (Rs 24.75 crore) to become the most expensive overseas player in IPL history. A fierce bidding war between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings ended with KKR winning him.
KKR also tried to buy Venkatesh Iyer but dropped out allowing Royal Challengers Bengaluru to sign him for Rs 7 crore.
Pathirana whose base price was Rs 2 crore became the most expensive Sri Lankan player in an IPL auction after a tough contest between franchises with Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants eventually pulling out.
Green will receive Rs 18 crore (around USD 1.9 million) for the season while the remaining money goes to the BCCI’s player development programme as per IPL rules for foreign players. Pathirana will get the full amount since it falls within the salary cap.
KKRs managing director Venky Mysore said the franchise was pleased with the price they paid for Green and expects him to contribute significantly to the team next season.
We are very happy. Something that we were focussed on and hoping. Quite happy with price at which we got him. Would have been a concern if it had gone higher. We were keen and attached but had it affected our rest of auction we would have let him go Mysore said at a press conference.
He will add lot to our team and with our new power coach Andre Russell we know what he does with bat and ball couldnt be happier.
The rule the BCCI made on the Rs 18 crore our standpoint is there is no concern in any case its an outflow for franchise he added.
Cameron Green who earlier played for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru has appeared in 29 IPL matches so far scoring a total of 707 runs and taking 16 wickets.
Green said Im so excited to be part of Kolkata for this years IPL. To get down to the Eden Gardens to get used to the atmosphere. I hope it is a great year for us. So see you soon. Ami KKR!
Bangladesh’s experienced left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 9.20 crore. Meanwhile uncapped Madhya Pradesh left-arm pacer Mangesh Yadav went to Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 5.20 crore after a tough bidding battle with Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 23-year-old.

Australia’s Cooper Connolly became Punjab Kings’ first buy of the auction for Rs 3 crore. Prithvi Shaw however went unsold despite good recent form in domestic cricket.
