Ransomware attacks in India have increased by 55 percent in one year. Last year, there were 98 ransomware attacks in India and most of the attacks occurred in May and October. This information has been obtained from the recently published ‘Ransomware Trends 2024: Insights for Global Cybersecurity Readiness’. This report has been published by Cyber Peace which is a cyber security agency.
Cyberpeace continuously monitored 166 threat actor groups using advanced OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) technology and collected data from 658 servers/underground resources. According to the report, ransomware groups using these underground resources carried out 5,233 attacks in 153 countries. The most targeted country in this list was America, followed by Canada, UK, Germany and other countries.
The report said that “KillSec” was the top threat, while “LockBit3” emerged as the second biggest threat. Other groups such as Ransomhub, Darkvault, and Cloop reported moderate levels of activity.
Most affected areas in India
The industrial sector in India was the most targeted, accounting for 75% of the total incidents. After this, the healthcare sector (12%) and financial sector (10%) are the most affected. The government sector was least affected, with only 3% incidents reported. This distribution shows that better cybersecurity measures are needed in the industrial sector, while vulnerabilities in the healthcare, financial and government domains also need to be addressed.
