AUS vs ENG 3rd Test: A significant setback for Australia came on Wednesday, December 17, when veteran batsman Steve Smith was ruled out of the third Test match against England in the current Ashes 2025–26. Due to Smith’s vertigo-like symptoms, Australia’s playing XI had to be rearranged at the last minute.

Cricket Australia stated that Smith had been experiencing nausea and vertigo for the previous several days as the hosts emerged victorious in the five-match series. Smith did not participate in the Adelaide Test even though he passed a pre-match fitness test. Australia had to make a last-minute tweak to their batting order and bring in Usman Khawaja.

Australian captain Pat Cummins, who himself has returned from an injury layoff and missed the first two games, said that Khawa will replace Smith at number four after choosing to bat first. At the toss, Cummins said, “Steve has been feeling a little under the weather for the past few days.” “He didn’t believe he would get up for this one, but he came and gave it a go this morning. He is thus leaving for home. We’re fortunate to have someone like Usman who can take over immediately away. Usman is going to be number four.

Smith was “close to being available” according to Cricket Australia, but medical personnel advised him not to play because of his symptoms. After being declared out of the game, Smith was seen walking off the field. Smith went to the nets the next day after missing Monday’s training, but he didn’t seem sharp and was struck in the groin.

Australia came into the game having won the previous two matches in Perth and Brisbane by 8 wickets apiece, respectively, and were riding high from their impressive performances. Conversely, Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett were replaced by Cummins and Nathan Lyon, who thereafter returned to the side.

Regarding England, the only alteration made by the visitors was the addition of Josh Tongue in place of Gus Atkinson.
