Bangladesh: India has formally summoned the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in New Delhi to convey strong diplomatic objections following recent developments that have raised serious security and political concerns. The move comes amid threats directed at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and controversial statements made by certain political leaders in Bangladesh regarding India’s northeastern region, often referred to as the Seven Sisters. These remarks, along with the evolving internal situation in Bangladesh, have prompted India to underline its expectations regarding safety, regional stability, and responsible political discourse.
The High Commissioner of Bangladesh, Muhammad Riaz Hamidullah, was called to the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, where India expressed its deep concern over what it described as a deteriorating security environment. Indian officials highlighted that certain extremist groups in Bangladesh have reportedly announced plans that could endanger the Indian diplomatic mission in Dhaka. Such developments were conveyed as unacceptable and contrary to international diplomatic norms.
India’s position emphasized that diplomatic missions must be protected under all circumstances, irrespective of political transitions or internal unrest. The government stressed that ensuring the safety of foreign missions is a fundamental obligation of any host nation under international law.
During the interaction, India categorically rejected what it called false and misleading narratives being spread by extremist elements in Bangladesh. According to Indian authorities, these narratives attempt to link India to recent incidents inside Bangladesh without credible evidence. New Delhi expressed disappointment that the interim administration in Dhaka has not conducted transparent investigations or shared substantiated findings related to these incidents.
India maintained that such narratives risk inflaming public sentiment and undermining long-standing bilateral relations. Officials reiterated that India has no role in internal political disputes in Bangladesh and respects its sovereignty.
India underlined that its relationship with Bangladesh is deeply rooted in shared history, particularly the 1971 Liberation War, which laid the foundation for Bangladesh as an independent nation. Over the decades, the two countries have strengthened cooperation through development projects, trade, connectivity initiatives, and people-to-people exchanges.
New Delhi reiterated its support for peace, stability, and democratic processes in Bangladesh. It emphasized that free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections conducted in a peaceful atmosphere are essential for long-term stability. India also conveyed that it expects the interim government in Bangladesh to uphold democratic values while maintaining law and order.
Tensions were further aggravated by provocative remarks from a student-led political figure associated with Bangladesh’s National Citizen Party. At a protest rally, the leader claimed that India’s northeastern states would be separated from the country, a statement that India views as inflammatory and irresponsible. These comments were reportedly made during public demonstrations and coincided with Bangladesh’s Victory Day commemorations.
India dismissed these assertions as baseless and dangerous rhetoric that could destabilize the region. Officials noted that India’s northeastern states are an integral part of the country, with deep constitutional, cultural, and economic ties to the rest of India.
Since the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has been experiencing a period of political uncertainty. Observers note a rise in radical ideological elements and attempts to dilute the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War. There are growing concerns about narratives that seek to distance Bangladesh from India while promoting closer alignment with Pakistan, despite the historical context of the conflict and human rights violations during the war.

In response to heightened concerns, Indian authorities have implemented preventive measures along sensitive stretches of the India-Bangladesh border. In Assam’s Cachar district, prohibitory orders were imposed to curb illegal movement and prevent potential infiltration by extremist elements. Officials stated that these steps are precautionary and aimed at maintaining peace and stability in border areas.
The administration cited apprehensions about unauthorized cross-border activities that could disrupt communal harmony or internal security. India reiterated that such measures are defensive and necessary given the prevailing circumstances.
India concluded its diplomatic communication by expressing hope that Bangladesh’s interim administration will take all necessary steps to restore order, counter extremist activities, and ensure the safety of diplomatic missions.
