Sakat Chauth, also referred to as Sankashti Chaturthi, Tilkut Chauth, or Maghi Chauth, is a significant fast observed in Hinduism on the fourth day of the Magha month. This ritual is primarily undertaken by mothers who pray for the longevity, health, and prosperity of their children. Let's delve into the reasons this festival is associated with Lord Ganesha and the mythological narratives surrounding it.
Why is Sakat Chauth dedicated to Lord Ganesha?
According to ancient texts, on this particular Chaturthi in the Magha month, Lord Ganesha overcame a significant challenge in his life, showcasing his wisdom. On this day, he circled around his parents, Shiva and Parvati, symbolizing that the universe lies at the feet of one's parents. Known as 'Vighnaharta', or the remover of obstacles, it is believed that fasting on this day earns Lord Ganesha's favor, helping to eliminate any troubles (Sakat) that may threaten one's children, hence the name 'Sakat Chauth'.
The end of the crisis that befell Lord Ganesha himself
Mythologically, a significant crisis in Lord Ganesha's life was resolved on this day. Created by Mother Parvati from her own body, he faced a battle with Lord Shiva, resulting in his rebirth with an elephant's head. This day marks the celebration of his rebirth and the recognition of his divine form.
When is Sakat Chauth in 2026?
According to the Vedic calendar, the Chaturthi tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the Magha month will commence on January 6th at 8:01 AM and conclude on January 7th at 6:52 AM. Thus, the Sakat Chauth fast will be observed on January 6th, 2026.
Importance and Tradition of the Fast
On this day, women engage in a waterless fast throughout the day, breaking their fast only after offering prayers to the moon in the evening. During the puja, laddoos made from sesame seeds and jaggery (Tilkut) are presented to Lord Ganesha.
On this day, an offering of tilkut (a sweet made with sesame seeds and jaggery) is made to Lord Ganesha. Donating and consuming sesame seeds during the month of Magha is deemed auspicious for both health and spiritual well-being, and is particularly favored by Lord Ganesha.
