Money Saving Expert has put his finance skills to good use as he's shared his go-to strategy when playing Monopoly to help win you the game.
As the holidayperiod is here, several households will be dusting off their collections of board gamesto have friendly game nights with friends and family - or at least try to. While Monopoly has been a household favourite for generations, the game is still known to cause arguments among players whenever the board comes out. While Monopoly has spun-off into a variety of versions, the major rulesstay the same, with the goal being to become the wealthiest player by buying, trading, and developing properties (with houses and hotels) to collect rent, ultimately driving all opponents into bankruptcy and being the last player remaining with money.
Some people might have specific strategies they believe will help them win, such as focusing on buying properties in certain areas of the board, or rushing to upgrade their properties to houses and hotels to increase the amount they earn from them.
However, Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has now shared what he believes is the best strategy to boost your earnings while also making your co-players having to spend more, increasing their risk of going bankrupt.
Taking to Instagram, Martin shared a clip from his 2024 show How to Win at Board Games, where he went on to share how buying just three houses in the game can increase your chances of winning.
"Why just three houses? Well, this is probably the biggest power move," he said at the start of the clip.
He went on to explain that when you buy one house, on average across all properties on the Monopoly board, the return on the investment is 26%, which increases to 56% if you buy a second house.
However, if you own three different houses across the board, it increases to an impressive 110% return.
"After that, the incremental gain isn't as good," Martin said, explaining that his strategy is to buy three houses, before then developing your other properties up to three houses.
Only when all of your properties have three houses is when you start thinking about boosting it up to a hotel.
Several people soon took to the comment section, as many praised the money saving expert for the board game strategy hack.
"Can't wait to ruin the family christmas with this," one person jokingly said, while another user quipped: "Do you have any financial advice on affording a divorce after implementing this strategy?"
A third person said: "One of your only videos I will not be sharing with my friends."
Someone else when on to share their own Monopoly method, saying: "Don't bother with hotels - as soon as you buy hotels you free up houses that others can then buy. If you have all the houses no one else can buy them and improve their chances of income."
