According to railway rules, each passenger is allowed to carry a certain weight of luggage free of charge, depending on their travel class. Passengers traveling in Second Class can carry up to 35 kg of luggage without any fee.
For train passengers, being careless about luggage can now be costly. It is often observed that passengers board trains with excessive luggage, making it difficult to move around inside the coach and causing inconvenience to other passengers. Considering this problem, Indian Railways has clarified that carrying luggage exceeding the prescribed limit will now incur extra charges. This move by the railways is considered a major step towards strictly enforcing luggage rules, similar to those for air travel. This information was provided by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. Telugu Desam Party MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy had asked the government in the Lok Sabha whether the railways would implement a system similar to that at airports for train passengers. In response, the Railway Minister stated that the luggage limit for passengers is already fixed according to the coach type, and these rules will now be strictly enforced. So, let's tell you how much luggage you can carry in each type of train coach.
Luggage limit is fixed according to the coach
According to railway rules, each passenger is allowed to carry a certain weight of luggage free of charge, depending on their travel class. Passengers traveling in Second Class can carry up to 35 kg of luggage without any fee. If needed, they can carry a maximum of 70 kg of luggage, but they will have to pay an extra charge for this. Sleeper class passengers are allowed to carry up to 40 kg of luggage free of charge. If a passenger carries more than this, they can carry a maximum of 80 kg, but this will incur an extra fee.
Rules are even stricter in AC and Chair Car coaches
The rules are even stricter for passengers traveling in AC Three Tier and Chair Car coaches. In these coaches, passengers are allowed to carry only up to 40 kg of luggage, and this is the maximum limit. Carrying luggage exceeding this weight is not permitted according to the rules. First Class and AC Two-Tier passengers are allowed to carry up to 50 kg of luggage free of charge, with a maximum limit of 100 kg. AC First Class passengers are allowed to carry up to 70 kilograms of luggage free of charge, while they can carry up to 150 kg by paying an additional fee. Besides weight, the railways have also established clear rules regarding luggage size. Passengers can only carry trunks, suitcases, or boxes in the coach if their external dimensions do not exceed 100 cm in length, 60 cm in width, and 25 cm in height. If the luggage is larger than this, it will not be allowed in the passenger coach. Such luggage must be booked in the brake van or parcel van.
