Veteran television actor Gajendra Singh Chauhan best known for playing Yudhishthir in the iconic TV show Mahabharat recently became a victim of cyber fraud. The incident has once again highlighted how convincing online scams have become even trapping well-known public figures. Fortunately timely intervention by the Mumbai Police ensured that the actor did not suffer a financial loss. The fraud took place on December 10 when Chauhan came across a Facebook advertisement offering dry fruits at extremely discounted prices under the name of a popular retail brand. Believing the offer to be genuine the actor clicked on the link attached to the advertisement to place an order. How did the cyber fraud happen? After clicking the link Chauhan was asked to complete a verification process. During this step he unknowingly shared an OTP linked to his bank account. Moments later he received a message alert stating that ₹98000 had been debited from his account. Realising that he had been scammed the actor immediately contacted the Oshiwara Police Station and lodged a cyber fraud complaint without any delay. How did Mumbai Police recover the money? Following the complaint the cyber cell of Oshiwara Police swung into action. Under the supervision of senior police inspector Sanjay Chavan and police inspector Anand Pagare the team traced the transaction route. The investigation revealed that the defrauded amount was being transferred through a payment gateway towards a major electronics retailer. The cyber cell promptly placed a hold on the transaction and managed to reverse the amount before it could be withdrawn. With coordinated efforts by sub-inspector Sharad Devre ASI Ashok Konde and constable Vikram Sarnob the full Rs 98000 was successfully credited back to Chauhan’s bank account. What warning did the actor issue after the incident? After recovering his money Gajendra Singh Chauhan urged people to remain cautious while shopping online. He warned against falling for flashy ads promising heavy discounts stating that such offers are often fake and designed to trap unsuspecting users. He also advised citizens to avoid clicking on unknown links and never share OTPs or banking details with anyone regardless of how authentic a website or message may appear. What should people do if they face cyber fraud? The actor stressed the importance of acting quickly in such cases. He advised victims of cyber fraud to immediately contact their local police station or dial the national cybercrime helpline number 1930.
