The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which is almost two decades old, has now been completely transformed by a new legal framework. It has been linked to the government’s Developed India 2027 vision. The new law is expected to be quite significant. The number of days of guaranteed employment for rural families has also been increased.

Several Major Changes in the New Law

Several major changes have been introduced with the new law. The employment guarantee for rural families has been increased from 100 days to 125 days per year. The central government has presented this as a benefit for the people.

The government stated that the previous 100-day limit often acted more like a strict maximum limit rather than a minimum guarantee. While the central government previously bore the entire cost of wages under MGNREGA, the new VB-G RAM G framework provides for shared funding between the central and state governments. The expenditure will be shared in a 60:40 ratio.
