OpenAI has announced that it is updating its 'Model Spec,' a set of guidelines that determine how its AI models interact with and behave towards people. The primary goal of this update is to strengthen the safety of teenagers.
Teen Safety Before Information
OpenAI has stated that it will now prioritize "teen safety" above all other objectives. This means that if there is a conflict between providing information and ensuring safety, safety will be chosen. The company wants teenagers to have a safe and age-appropriate experience when using the chatbot.
What is the Model Spec?
The Model Spec is a public document that outlines the values the AI should adhere to, how it should behave when interacting with users, and what it should avoid. OpenAI is updating it because the needs and perspectives of teenagers differ from those of adults, and the AI should interact with them differently.
4 New Rules Added for Teenagers
The following specific rules will now apply to users aged 13-17:
1. Teen safety will be prioritized under all circumstances.
2. Teenagers will be encouraged to rely on real-world relationships and trusted individuals rather than solely on online chat.
3. The chatbot will exhibit balanced and sensible behavior, avoiding acting like either a child or an adult.
4. The chatbot's capabilities and limitations will be clearly explained.
What's Special About These Changes?
The biggest change is that ChatGPT's primary goal will no longer be "to be as helpful as possible," but rather to ensure the safety of teenagers. Additionally, the chatbot will now avoid simply agreeing with users aged 13-17.
Age-Identifying AI Model
OpenAI also mentioned that its age prediction model is still in its early stages. This model will attempt to determine the user's age based on subtle cues in the conversation, especially when the user has not explicitly stated their age. Interestingly, Anthropic is also developing a similar system. Currently, Anthropic's chatbot 'Claude' does not allow use by individuals under the age of 18.
