Aldi will be giving its staff a well-earned break with three days off during the festive period. The supermarket giant, which has more than 1,000 stores across the UK, confirmed in September that its branches would be closed on Christmas Day and won't reopen until Saturday, December 27, giving its employees the "opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones".

Stores will also be closed on New Year's Day, and will reopen the following day on Friday, January 2, 2026. Aldi has had these closures in place in previous years, and in the lead-up to Christmas, opening times will vary.

Rebecca Heley, communications director at Aldi UK, said: "Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones. That's why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year.

"We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you."

In their press release at the time highlighting the closures, Aldi noted that its shop workers were given a pay rise that month, boosting starting pay for store assistants up to £13.02 an hour nationally (£14.05 within the M25).

Aldi also remains the only supermarket in the UK to offer paid breaks.

They're not the only major supermarket planning closures over Christmas. All of Lidl's 980 stores in Britain will close for Christmas Day, and the vast majority be shuttered on New Year's Eve and Boxing Day.

Home Bargains also revealed in September that its stores will be shuttered on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day.

Stores will also close earlier than usual on Christmas Eve, shutting at 5pm. Only some stores in Wales and London will be open on Boxing Day, and the majority of its other UK supermarkets will be shut.

Poundland's stores will also be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day, to give staff some additional time off at the end of the year.
