Experts have revealed the top passwords that Brits should change right now to prevent their data from being stolen. Passwords protect a huge amount of our lives, including bank accounts, inboxes and social media accounts, but millions of Brits still rely on unsafe passwords according to researchers from cybersecurity firm NordPass.
Millions of passwords are leaked on the dark web without victims' knowledge every year, and just one leak could compromise a huge amount of your personal data, as many Brits use the same password for several accounts. Every password on the list could be cracked in less than 60 seconds, experts say. Variations of "password" as well as sports teams and the names of celebrities all made the list.
The NordPass experts also issued several reccomendations for better password strength:
The researchers from NordPass searched a database of 4.3TB, made up of passwords leaked on the Dark Web, to identify the codes that people most relied on.
The Dark Web is a mysterious part of the internet innaccessible through Google and unknown by most users. It is a collection of websites that exist on an encrypted network which cannot be viewed via traditional search engines or browsers. You can only access it by using secret passwords, or with software that allows users to remain untraceable. The technology behind the Dark Web was released to the public by the US Government in the 1990s.
Modern cybercriminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated - users have recently reported fake CAPTCHA tests that can infect your computer with malware.
