For many people preparing Christmas dinner today, sprouts are firmly on the menu. Traditionally, people cook these divisive vegetables with chestnuts and bacon for added crunch and saltiness. However, for some people, adding crispy smoked bacon and crunchy chestnuts to Brussels sprouts isn't enough to make them appealing.

If you've got some fussy sprout eaters visiting this Christmas, why not try a new recipe? Instead of using chestnuts and bacon, food writer Nagi from RecipeTin Eats suggests using Parmesan and panko breadcrumbs to make sprouts "mouthwateringly good". She said of the recipe: "The most amazing Roasted Brussels Sprouts are golden and CRISPY with a crunchy garlic parmesan crust!

"Ridiculously easy and mouthwateringly good, this is sure to become your 'go-to' Brussels sprouts recipe.

"Simple enough for midweek, impressive enough for holiday feasting, roasted is without a doubt the BEST way to eat Brussels sprouts!"

Parmesan with the addition of breadcrumbs creates a delicious golden crust on these Brussels sprouts, while garlic adds a beautiful, savoury flavour.

How to make crispy Brussels sprouts with parmesan

Ingredients:

  • 500g/1lb Brussels sprouts
  • Two tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Two garlic cloves, minced
  • Half tsp salt
  • Quarter tsp black pepper
  • Third cup (30g) Parmesan, finely grated
  • Third cup of panko breadcrumbs

Method

1. Preheat oven to 200°C/400°F.

2. Next, prepare the Brussels sprouts by trimming the base, cutting them in half, and removing the loose, rough outer leaves.

3. Then, place them in a bowl, pour over the oil and toss gently. Sprinkle with garlic, salt, pepper, parmesan and breadcrumbs.

4. Toss the sprouts to coat them and then spread them out on a tray, cut-side down.

5. Roast them for 20 minutes, flip them over and then roast them for a further 10 minutes until the outer leaves are deep golden brown and crispy.

6. Finally, transfer them to a warm serving bowl. Scrape the loose Parmesan breadcrumbs off the tray, sprinkle them over the sprouts, and serve immediately.
