NTA: The National Testing Agency (NTA) may introduce facial recognition for candidates in entrance examinations, including the JEE Main scheduled for January. This information was provided by a senior official of the Ministry of Education. The move aims to strengthen exam security and prevent impersonation fraud in large-scale tests.

According to the news agency PTI, candidates may also be required to upload their live photographs during the application process. Officials say this step will help ensure that the applications are being filled out by genuine candidates.

Pilot Project for Facial Authentication
According to the report, this plan follows a pilot project conducted during NEET 2025, where Aadhaar-based facial authentication was tested at select examination centers in Delhi. This trial, conducted in collaboration with UIDAI, NIC, and NTA, explored the feasibility of using facial recognition technology to verify the identity of candidates at examination centers.

Ministry Issued Several Press Notes
Following NEET UG, a press note issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology stated that this effort “explores its potential for future use and how it can play a crucial role in preventing cheating attempts during entrance examinations.” In a public notice issued in September, the NTA asked JEE (Main) 2026 candidates to ensure that their Aadhaar cards have the correct name, date of birth, latest photograph, address, and father's name updated.

Radhakrishnan Committee Recommendation
In another notice issued in October, the NTA stated that it would obtain information such as name, date of birth, photograph, and address from UIDAI through Aadhaar authentication. A committee headed by former ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan had recommended improved security measures, including biometric authentication, in a report last year “to maintain the integrity of the examinations.”
