  • Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first optical-based AI chip called ‘Lightzen’, which runs on light particles (photons) instead of electricity.
  • In certain tasks, the chip is 100 times faster than the world’s most powerful Nvidia GPU and extremely power-efficient.
  • This chip is very useful for image processing, 3D graphics and AI models and it is expected to revolutionize the field of AI.

Litezen AI chip China fastest in the world : Chinese (China) Scientists have claimed to have created the world’s fastest AI chip. However, it is not designed for computing, but for specific tasks such as training AI models, running games, and processing big data. This microchip is powered by light instead of electricity. It is claimed that this light-based Litezen AI chip is the fastest AI chip in the world and is 100 times faster and more power-efficient than GPUs from giants like Nvidia in certain tasks.

However, this chip is not a complete replacement for Nvidia’s GPU. It is designed for specific tasks; Not for all types of computing. Nvidia’s GPUs, such as the A100, are very popular in today’s AI world. These chips run on the flow of electrons or electricity. They can be thought of as extremely powerful, calculators that can perform a variety of tasks, such as training AI models, creating videos, running games, and working with big data. However, a major problem with these GPUs is that they consume a lot of power and heat up quickly. Their production requires very advanced and expensive factory technology. A Chinese-developed LightGen chip uses photons, or particles of light, instead of electricity. Calculations are made by the collision and scattering of light, rather than by electronic circuits. You can think of it as if light is passing through glass pipes instead of electrical wires, making calculations.

The advantage is that the light is very bright, generates little heat and consumes very little electricity. The downside, however, is that these chips are not multitasking, meaning they cannot be programmed for all types of tasks. The LightGen chip was developed by a team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Tsinghua University. It is completely optical, i.e. light-based, and contains more than 2 million photonic neurons. This chip can perform functions to image creation, style transfer, photo enhancement and 3D image processing. The researchers claim that this chip is 100 times faster than Nvidia GPUs and consumes significantly less power in these tasks.

The ACCEL chip, also developed, does not break the calculation

Tsinghua University has also developed a chip called ACCEL. It is a hybrid chip, some of its components are light-based and some are based on old-fashioned electronic circuits. The good news is, it can also be manufactured using China’s old semiconductor technology. The ACCEL chip is claimed to deliver 4.6 petaflops of power. A petaflop is one trillion calculations per second. Although it sounds like a supercomputer, the key is that this chip can only perform certain mathematical operations. It cannot run normal computer programs or train AI models.
