Jammu: The soldier, who allegedly pumped six bullets into his senior before fleeing from an Army camp, has been arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

News of the death of Subedar Surjeet Singh broke on Tuesday night. Officials confirmed that the JCO had died of gunshot injuries, but made it clear that there was no terror angle involved.

Rajeshwar Singh Salathia, the SHO of the Bari Brahmana police station in Jammu, told Hindustan Times that Sepoy Parul Sharma has been arrested for shooting the 46-year-old Subedar dead inside the camp of the 157 Territorial Army in Samba.

Sharma, a resident of Kanal in the Bishnah tehsil of Jammu, dropped his service weapon and ammunition after the incident and fled the scene. An FIR has been registered against him under Section 101 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Sources told HT that a dispute over the duty chart triggered a heated altercation between the jawan and the JCO. In a fit of rage, the soldier allegedly fired as many as six bullets from his weapon at the JCO before escaping from the unit.

Meanwhile, Subedar Singh was cremated with full military honours at his native Sarla village in the Reasi district. A pall of gloom descended on the village as his mortal remains arrived home. Senior officers from the Army, police, and civil administration laid wreaths on his coffin to pay their respects.

Thousands of people from across the district joined the funeral procession, raising slogans in praise of the officer, the Indian Army, and the nation. Amid emotional scenes and chants of “Shaheed Amar Rahe,” hundreds of mourners, including family members and relatives, bid a tearful farewell to the Subedar.
