A children's toy sold at John Lewis has been urgently recalled, with shoppers warned to stop using it "immediately". The popular retailer has been forced to pull the Wooden Roast Dinner Toy as it poses risk of choking for babies and toddlers.

The Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) stated that the top has failed to meet the required safety regulations. Manufactured in China, the kitchen roleplay comprises a small wooden tray,a wooden knife and small wooden items in the style of a classic roast dinner. According to the officials, the toy is a hazard to kids below the age of three years.

The OPSS said in a statement: "The product has been recalled from end users. The product presents a risk of choking as the hook and loop fastening (Velcro) can detach during reasonably foreseeable use, creating a small part.

"These small parts pose a choking hazard to young children... particularly those under 36 months of age who have a natural tendency to explore objects by placing them in their mouths. The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011."

Anyone who has purchased the toy with the product code 75610228 can return it to any store for a full refund. Local Authority Trading Standards said the product was sold in John Lewis shops between September 3 and November 24 this year, reports The Sun.

Recently, Sainsbury's and Argos recalled a game which poses a "serious" choking hazard. Jungle Heads and Tails was withdrawn from sale before Christmas Day amid concern that a small cardboard disc, which should have been removed, was included.

Similarly, Orchard Toys pulled from the shelves a batch of its Jungle Heads & Tails product as it presents a "serious risk of choking" for small children.

The product, the note added, "does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011."

The product, described as a set of 24 cards and an elephant playing piece, should be kept "out of reach of small children", and consumers are advised to stop using the product immediately, the Product Safety and Standards Office said.
