Lucknow’s Healthcare Transformation: Lucknow is preparing to enter a new phase of healthcare development as several premier medical institutions in the city move toward large-scale infrastructure expansion and service enhancement. These developments are expected to significantly strengthen patient care capacity, introduce advanced medical technologies, and improve medical education and emergency services across the region.

Lucknow’s healthcare transformation

Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences Set for a Historic Expansion

The Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences is preparing for a landmark expansion that will redefine its position among India’s leading government medical institutions. A new hospital building with a capacity of one thousand beds is scheduled to begin construction in the New Year. The foundation stone ceremony is planned shortly after the Makar Sankranti period.

The upcoming multi-storey facility will be developed on a twenty-acre plot located opposite the existing Mother and Child Hospital campus. Administrative approvals and tendering processes have already been completed, allowing construction to move forward without delay. Authorities aim to complete the project within a two-year timeframe.

Once operational, the new hospital will raise the institute’s total bed strength from one thousand two hundred fifty to two thousand two hundred fifty beds. This expansion will place the institute ahead of other major medical centers in the region in terms of inpatient capacity.

Organised Clinical Services and Emergency Care Expansion

The hospital administration plans to distribute medical services strategically between the existing and new campuses. Super speciality departments will continue to function from the main campus, while broad speciality services will be shifted to the new building. Both locations will operate independent emergency departments to ensure uninterrupted care for critically ill patients.

In addition, a newly developed forty-five-bed emergency unit on the main campus is ready for inauguration. This facility increases the total number of emergency beds to one hundred twenty-eight, addressing a long-standing shortage of emergency care resources. The project has been completed at an estimated cost of fifty million rupees and is expected to significantly reduce patient wait times during medical emergencies.

Advanced Neurosciences and Cutting-Edge Treatment Facilities

A major milestone in neurological care has already been achieved with the launch of the state’s first Advanced Neurosciences Centre. The institute is now preparing to install a highly advanced Gamma Knife system by March 2026. This technology allows precise, non-invasive treatment of brain tumors and other complex neurological conditions.

To support this installation, a specialized protective bunker is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by February. Once operational, this facility will eliminate the need for patients to travel to metropolitan cities for advanced brain treatments, saving both time and cost for families.

SGPGI’s Paediatric Care and Workforce Strengthening

Significant progress is also underway at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, particularly in the field of paediatric healthcare. Construction of North India’s first Advanced Paediatric Centre is moving at a rapid pace. The first phase includes over three hundred beds, administrative offices, and twelve paediatric departments, with completion expected by the end of next year.

A second phase will add additional beds and departments, ultimately establishing twenty-three specialised paediatric units. These will cover critical fields such as oncology, nephrology, neurology, and neurosurgery. The centre will also play a key role in medical education by training dozens of paediatric super-specialists each year, helping address long-standing workforce shortages.

Alongside infrastructure growth, the institute has initiated a large recruitment drive to appoint over two hundred permanent doctors. Interviews are scheduled to begin soon, ensuring that staffing levels keep pace with expanding facilities.

New Capabilities at KGMU and Cancer Care Expansion

King George’s Medical University is also preparing to introduce advanced transplant services in the coming year. Plans are underway to launch a lung transplant unit, along with expanded heart transplant capabilities. Academic growth is also a priority, with new postgraduate courses proposed in pain management and trauma critical care.

Meanwhile, the Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute is set for a substantial capacity increase. More than five hundred additional beds will be added, nearly doubling its inpatient strength. A new diagnostic imaging system has already arrived and will become operational soon. Preparations are also being made to introduce advanced radiotherapy solutions, although staffing and operational challenges remain areas of focus.

A New Era for Healthcare in Lucknow

Together, these developments signal a transformative period for Lucknow’s healthcare ecosystem. Expanded infrastructure, modern technology, improved emergency response, and stronger medical education systems are expected to benefit millions across the state. As these projects move from planning to execution, the city is steadily positioning itself as a major healthcare hub in North India.
