PAN-Aadhaar Linking Deadline: Taxpayers who have not yet linked their Aadhaar with their Permanent Account Number (PAN) have very little time left to do so. The last date to complete PAN-Aadhaar linking is December 31, 2025. If you do not link both in time, you may have to face big problems in tax and financial matters.

The Income Tax Department, in a notification issued on April 3, 2025, has clarified that people whose PAN was issued using the Aadhaar number before October 1, 2024, will have to complete the linking process by the end of this year. This instruction is especially important for those people who had made their PAN using Aadhaar Enrollment ID instead of final Aadhaar number. These people will now have to link their PAN using their original Aadhaar number by December 31, 2025. If the deadline is missed, PAN will become inactive from January 1, 2026, which can have a serious impact on daily financial and tax related tasks.

Penalties and past deadlines

Earlier, the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking was fixed as June 30, 2023 and later it was extended to May 31, 2024, with a late fee of Rs 1000. Tax experts say that those covered under the latest extension will not have to pay any penalty if they complete the linking within the revised timeline. However, other PAN holders who missed the previous deadline may have to pay a fee of Rs 1000 under section 234H.

Why is it necessary to link PAN and Aadhaar?

  • Let us tell you that an inactive PAN card can prevent taxpayers from filing income tax returns, getting refunds and completing transactions where PAN is necessary.
  • Apart from this, forms like TDS or TCS deduction, 15G or 15H may be rejected.
  • Along with this, banks, mutual funds and brokers may suspend services due to KYC problems.
  • Apart from this, refund payment also cannot be done.

Link PAN-Aadhaar through e-filing portal

The Income Tax Department has made the linking process easy through its e-filing portal. Taxpayers should check their PAN-Aadhaar status as soon as possible to ensure that their Aadhaar details, including mobile number, are updated to avoid any last-minute glitches.
