I stored carrots three different ways - one method kept them fresh for days

If you have leftover raw carrots after the Christmas rush, a food content creator has shared how to keep them fresh until your next meal. In an experiment by Gavin Wren, uncooked carrots were shown to remain fresh for up to 10 days when stored in a specific way.

Ahead of looking into three ways of storing carrots, the content creator noted that root vegetables are "really easy to go off in the bottom of the fridge," but a quick trick can solve this.

For his experiment, seen on the Channel 5 show Fresh vs Frozen: Which Is Better?, Gavin stored carrots using three different methods; in an open glass container, in an airtight container with a sheet of kitchen paper to retain moisture, and in an open container filled with water.

Gavin left all three in his fridge for 10 days to see which method worked best. Speaking on the show, he analysed the results one by one, starting with the carrots exposed to air.

Holding one up to the camera, he noted they had "gone bendy," adding: "They've gone very pale, they've got very dry skin, it's a nightmare to peel."

Next, he examined the sealed container with the kitchen towel, which helps absorb excess moisture and slow the growth of mould or bacteria. "Straight away they look so much better," he said.

"They don't look dry, they look like the carrot you buy in the supermarket. There's a bit of moisture at the end, but it hasn't gone mouldy."

Testing its firmness, he added: "That was a strong snap, that's a solid carrot. I'd definitely rate that a lot higher than the first ones."

Finally, he discovered that storing carrots in water, and preventing air from reaching them, had helped them stay fresher for longer.

"They've got the strongest colour still," he observed. "That is so solid, that is the freshest one so far. That's been in there for 10 days already and it feels as fresh as the day I bought it."

Breaking the "fantastic" carrot in two, he added: "That is a strong snap."

Proven to be the most effective method, the show advises cutting off the carrot tops first to prevent regrowth.

A voice over artist from the show also stressed the importance of changing the water regularly and not drinking it under any circumstances.

According to Good Food magazine, carrots stored in water in the fridge can last up to three months.

However, wherever you choose to store carrots - whether in the fridge, cupboard, or pantry - avoid placing them near ethylene-releasing produce such as apples, avocados, bananas, peppers, and tomatoes, as this can speed up ripening and fermentation.
