We know Goa for its beaches and fun, but there is a hidden Kurdi village in South Goa. This village remains lost in the water of the dam for most of the year. Only with the arrival of the month of May, when the water recedes, this village is slowly seen floating on the surface. As if some old memories have awakened!
Actually, this missing village also has a story. Around the year 1980, there was a severe water shortage in South Goa. It was decided to build a huge dam to provide relief to the people. Salauli Dam was completed in 1986. An area of 5 kilometers around it was evacuated so that water could collect. Kurdi village was situated in this area. More than 600 families there were shifted to a new place. Houses, shops, factories were all buried under water. But every May-June during the dry season they all re-emerge!
When the village comes up, the old residents come to reconnect with their roots. They look at the broken houses and bring back memories. Gradually this news spread, and today it has become a hotspot for tourists. A lot of people come in summer. Apart from old houses, there is also an 18th century Someshwar temple and an ancient church.
