An overturned lorry in Kent triggered delays after it crashed and left the carriageway in the early hours of Sunday morning. The A20 westbound was closed for hours between the A256 at Dover and the B2011 at Capel-le-Ferne to allow Kent Police to recover the HGV.

Police were alerted to the crash at around 1.20am, and the road was closed for the majority of the morning on December 28. National Highways put a diversion in place for traffic bound for London, advising drivers to exit the A20 at the York Street Junction. Drivers were urged to allow for additional journey time and to seek alternative routes.

National Highways said: "The closure is required to ensure the safety of officers and specialist recovery crews working at the scene, and recovery operations are expected to take most of the morning.

"If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey."

A spokesperson for Kent Police confirmed the force was alerted to reports of an overturned lorry on the side of the A20 near Dover at around 1.20am on Sunday, December 28, The Sun reported. They added: "Officers attended and have closed the Londonbound carriageway while the vehicle is recovered."

It has not yet been confirmed whether anyone was injured in the crash.

Drivers were advised to use the following route, marked by signs with the hollow square symbol:

  • Exit the A20 at the York Street Junction

  • Travel northbound on York Street

  • Continue to the Priory Road roundabout

  • Turn left onto the B2011 Folkestone Road

  • Follow the B2011 westbound

  • Re-join the A20 westbound at the Courtwood Interchange
