Drying laundry during the winter months can seem impossible. Drying outside isn't an option, and drying inside without any aid can result in damp and mould. So, how do households dry heavy items like towels and bedding?
Rachel Fraser, product specialist at home retailer Pillow Talk, said: "During colder months, people often wash and dry more frequently but with less ventilation. Overusing detergent or fabric softener when drying indoors can leave a residue that traps moisture, reduces absorbency, and makes fabrics feel coarse. When drying isn't managed properly, it can also lead to lingering damp smells and even mould."
With that in mind, Rachel has shared her top tips for keeping bedding and towels fresh through the colder months without relying on tumble drying or outdoor drying.
Avoid overloading and overdosingThe expert said: "It's tempting to use extra detergent when clothes smell damp, but this actually makes things worse. Too much detergent can build up in fabrics and stop them from drying completely."
Use the correct amount of detergent for the amount of clothes you're washing, and run an extra spin cycle if needed.
Ditch the fabric conditioner for towelsAccording to Rachel, fabric softeners can coat the fibres of your towels, making them less absorbent. Instead, add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle once a month.
White vinegar helps to lift residue and "keep towels fluffy", as well as remove odours.
Rachel warned households to "never" dry items directly on radiators. Whilst this may be suitable for smaller items like socks or underwear, it's not advised for towels or bedding.
This is because it can trap moisture and create musty smells. Instead, use a dehumidifier to dry washing or dry near an open window.
Follow care labels and give items space"Different materials need different care," Rachel explained. She added: "Always check the label, wash delicate items like silk pillowcases in laundry bags, avoid cramming too many bulky items like duvets and toppers into one load."
Protect your investmentTo extend the life of bedding, it's recommended to use washable mattress and pillow protectors, rotating between two to three sheet sets.
This keeps bedding hygienic, makes laundry less overwhelming and helps everything last longer."
