Twinkle Khanna is not just another Bollywood star kid who followed a predictable path. Over the years she has quietly built a powerful identity of her own as an actress a bestselling author a producer and a sharp observer of life. As she turns 52 it’s the perfect moment to look back at the many chapters of her journey that go far beyond the silver screen.
Born into stardom but chose her own way
Born on December 29 1973 in Mumbai Twinkle Khanna is the daughter of legendary actor Rajesh Khanna and veteran actress Dimple Kapadia. Acting ran in her blood but it was never the only path she imagined for herself. Interestingly Twinkle once wanted to become a chartered accountant before destiny nudged her toward cinema. With encouragement from her parents she entered Bollywood and made her debut in 1995 with Barsaat opposite Bobby Deol. The film was a commercial success and won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
She went on to star in popular films like Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai Baadshah International Khiladi Mela and Joru Ka Ghulam sharing screen space with some of the biggest names in the industry.
Why did she step away from acting?
Despite a successful run Twinkle chose to step away from acting at the peak of her career. She often admitted that acting didn’t fully satisfy her creative instincts. Instead of chasing more roles she turned her focus to writing a decision that would define her second innings.
From actress to bestselling author
Twinkle reinvented herself as an author with her debut book Mrs Funnybones which became an instant bestseller. Her sharp humour honest storytelling and relatable take on marriage motherhood and modern life struck a chord with readers. She followed it up with The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad Pyjamas Are Forgiving and Welcome to Paradise cementing her place as one of India’s most loved contemporary writers. Some of her stories have even been adapted for the screen.
A producer with purpose
Twinkle also made her mark behind the camera through her production house Mrs Funnybones Movies. Films like Pad Man Tees Maar Khan Thank You and Khiladi 786 reflect her interest in meaningful yet entertaining cinema.
A strong personal life
Twinkle married actor Akshay Kumar in 2001 and the couple has two children Aarav and Nitara. Their relationship often marked by honesty and humour has stood strong for over two decades. Interestingly Akshay once revealed that Dimple Kapadia had asked the couple to live together before marriage a bold move at the time.
