EPFO Services to Undergo Major Reform: Offices to Function Like Passport Seva Kendras for Seamless Support

The Central Government is preparing to launch a major transformation in the functioning of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to improve accessibility and convenience for millions of PF subscribers. Under the new model, EPFO offices across the country will soon operate as single-window service centers, similar to Passport Seva Kendras, to provide faster and more user-friendly assistance for employee provident fund-related requests.

Currently, PF subscribers can only get most of their work done at their specific regional EPFO office—often leading to delays, crowding, and inconvenience. Once the new mechanism is fully implemented, subscribers will no longer be restricted to one jurisdictional office. Instead, they will be able to visit any EPFO branch nationwide to resolve PF concerns, from withdrawals to claim settlements, in a quicker and more efficient manner.

🔹 A Big Relief for PF Subscribers

Union Minister for Labour and Employment Mansukh Mandaviya announced that every EPFO office will be upgraded and connected through advanced digital platforms. The aim is to ensure that employees can receive all services under one roof without hassle, including:

  • PF withdrawals and transfers

  • Updating KYC details

  • Filing and tracking grievances

  • Claim processing and status checks

The new system will reduce paperwork and enhance coordination between regional offices, enabling faster grievance redressal and improved transparency.

🔹 Pilot Project Already Started in Delhi

During the inauguration of the new “Bhavishya Nidhi Bhavan” in Vatva, Gujarat, Minister Mandaviya shared key details about the pilot rollout.
He highlighted that the trial has already begun in Delhi, where technology integration is being tested to support centralised, seamless services.

Earlier, employees were required to approach only the EPFO office with which their employer was registered. This often caused delays for people relocating to new cities. The digital transformation aims to eliminate such complications, allowing subscribers to receive nationwide service support.

🔹 Inactive PF Accounts to Be Reactivated

Another major initiative under the plan focuses on the large number of dormant EPF accounts holding unclaimed funds. Many accounts remain inactive due to unresolved KYC issues or employees forgetting about older PF deposits after switching jobs.

EPFO will soon launch a secure digital system to:

✔ Verify identity and KYC documents faster
✔ Help account holders or their legal heirs recover pending funds
✔ Ensure no beneficiary is deprived of their rightful balance

The government also intends to strengthen social security protection for Indian workers employed overseas. Under new provisions being integrated into free trade agreements, PF contributions made abroad will remain safeguarded—allowing returning employees to withdraw their savings and benefits smoothly.

🔹 Expanding Social Security Coverage Nationwide

Sharing data on progress in social welfare, Mandaviya said:

  • In 2014, only 19% of India’s population was covered under social security schemes

  • The figure has now grown to 64%

  • About 94 crore citizens are currently benefiting from such programs

India is now the second-largest country in the world in terms of social security coverage, after China. The government aims to increase this coverage to 100 crore people by March 2026, ensuring financial security for a wider population.

📌 What This Means for Employees

This nationwide reform is expected to:

✔ Make EPFO services faster, digital, and more accessible
✔ Reduce dependency on local jurisdictional offices
✔ Enhance convenience for workers who move across states
✔ Improve tracking and resolution of PF claims

With these updates, the EPFO is set to provide a smoother experience for subscribers and deliver better social security services across India.
